Apple, are we getting new MacBooks this year?

"Apple, are you listening? We are asking for new MacBooks, and we're not sure when they'll arrive!" This is the rhetoric we've been hearing since the beginning of the year. But why do so many people care, and should you? Let's take a look.

In March of 2015, Apple updated the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. In May of 2015, they updated the 15-inch version. The MacBook Air models haven't seen a refresh since March of 2015. In the tech world, this is a long time. MacBook Pros and Airs use 5th-generation Intel Core processors. Intel has already released 6th-generation processors with better performance, graphics, and efficiency, and they're almost ready to unveil the 7th-generation, too. This will put Apple way behind other computer manufacturers, since they've already moved on to 6th-generation processors.

You may be thinking, "Well, I don't care about all the processor-generation shenanigans! Why should (or shouldn't) I care about the new MacBooks!?"

Here's the answer. We will probably get new MacBooks in the fourth quarter of 2016 with 6th-generation processors.

You probably have another question looming in your mind, though. "Since I want a MacBook, should I wait until the new ones are released or just buy one now?" The answer to that is simpler than you think.

If you need a computer now, it's a no-brainer to buy the current model. If you don't need one yet, you should probably just wait for the new ones to be released. This will allow you to buy a computer with better features and new hardware. It'll also allow you to keep your new computer longer, in theory, because it will be one generation (year) newer. This will hopefully help you "future-proof" the computer.
