Tech from the Past, Tech from the Future

Apple, the king of innovation, and Microsoft, the try-hard, recently changed places.

Yes, you read that right.

Last week, both tech giants unveiled shiny new models of their laptop lines, but Microsoft went further: It unveiled a new desktop that's got everyone excited. Let's talk mundane (cough, Apple, cough) first.

On Thursday, October 27, 2016, Apple unveiled the their latest update to the MacBook Pro line of laptops. These computers have always been known for their superior speed, operating system, and overall quality. Apple still holds true to this claim, but their innovations recently are few and far between. Although the Touch Bar, the highlight of the new laptops, is very innovative in itself, the overall style of the laptop has been the same for a whole decade. Let's take a look at the 2006 MacBook Pro compared to the 2016 MacBook Pro. The 2006 MacBook Pro of course had slower hardware, but the only other differences were the DVD drive, the screen resolution, and Touch Bar. Basically, the new MacBook is simply just an iterative upgrade from the previous models. Although the Touch Bar is a nice feature, it doesn't replace a touch screen.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has recently been receiving highly favorable feedback from fans after they unveiled a newly upgraded Surface Book and a new desktop called the Surface Studio. Yes, Microsoft just unveiled a desktop. Yes, people in 2016 are excited about a computer that sits on a desk its entire life. Crazy, right? Wrong. Here's the thing: People don't really care about their supposed needs when buying computers; they really only care about what is new and fashionable. This makes the Surface Studio very appealing to many people, enthusiasts and regular users alike. You may be thinking, "If Microsoft's new computer can draw so many people in, why can't Apple's?" Well, if Apple released a computer with a fancy touch screen and gorgeous accessories for that screen, such as the Surface Dial,

then they would, once again, be leading the computer world by a large margin. However, Apple continues to make only incremental upgrades to its hardware, and they are stuck in the old mindset that computers shouldn't include touch screens.

In conclusion, the reason so many people are disappointed in Apple's newest refresh of MacBook Pros is that they are stuck in the past. And the reason that Microsoft is doing so well is because they are looking straight into the future.
